“Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance.”
– Coco Chanel
Trendy and tacky – sisters from another mother – have always been what masses go after in an attempt to imitate style and elegance. Unfortunately for them, a knowing eye (at least in terms of class and fashion) will instantly recognize the difference between an inborn sophistication and a boutique off-the-doll bought one. There’s no trickery to elegance, just as there are no “cheap looks” any more - only lack of style. These days, anyone can look marvelous in cheap clothes, as long as they recognize and appreciate a good design. On the other hand, what’s a couture dress doing on a woman who can’t tell polyester from silk?
To excel in life, you need to know who you are. To look chic and cultivate a style, you need to know who you are as well. It’s up to you.
Elegance in Essence
When elegance is wisely executed, gorgeous pieces and fashion choices are given life; mostly, they either stun or are talked about, at least until they become the segment of
someone’s it factor. A sophisticated woman is the one who buys less, chooses well and understands who she is. She is not afraid to take risks and take that one extra piece off when she’s leaving the house. Her wardrobe isn’t packed; rather, it’s a selection of carefully chosen attire, those timeless pieces that, due to their fabulous initial design and craftsmanship, don’t ever loose on their freshness.
An LBD in various lengths and collar designs, a selection of feminine floral dresses in mild tones and graceful embellishments that agree with a woman’s character (although, we do love the juxtaposition of hard and soft in those floral designs that strike an almost brash, cheeky base and innocent floral patterns in milky shades), wide brim hats and tailored coats that follow the line of a body, complimenting it at its every curve – are the basis of every stylish fashionista. Naturally, tailored pants with a high-waist and/or bell legs add to one’s self-confidence while the (right) shoes – well, shoes – they speak volumes of a woman’s character.
Thoughtfully combined, the easiness of colors, quality materials and the sophistication of design do a true style make.
A twist to traditional pieces (after all, not everyone loves the simplicity of tradition) comes in a form of smart and practical design suited for a powerful 21st century woman.
The contrast of hard and soft, edgy and elegant, colorful and plain, add to the character of a modern woman, expressing who she is in a nutshell – a lioness, aimed to feed on her next big success, gracefully hunting.
Fitted jeans (low-waist skinny jeans are everything but elegant), tailored jackets, lace and leather, floral silk blouses, interesting patterns, checkered shirts and denim. Leather pants will look phenomenal paired with a silk blouse, and oversized cardigan and a large bag. Jackie O sunnies? Yes, please. Throw in knee-boots to the mix and you’ve got yourself a winner.
A modern woman is allowed to break the rules of the expected fashion sentiment and create her own, unique vibrations. We can’t help but love her bravery to take risks, as well as her exceptional sense of style.
Jewelry and All the Extras
While a pearl, or a diamond necklace would go a long way on a neck of a diva a few decades ago (yes, Elizabeth Taylor, we are looking at you!), these days we are witnessing an entirely different set of jewelry obsessions (not that we’d ever say “No” to a diamond necklace). With retro and vintage taking the fashion spotlight recently, it is no wonder we’ve gone back to minimalist jewelry, oversized, statement jewelry and hand-made accessories. More than ever, women are experimenting with accessories, turning them into personality traits rather than pieces of fashion. While pairing a black lace choker with diamond bud earrings, or an oversized statement necklace with a cuff bracelet could potentially read as kitsch, women are boldly experimenting and wearing every single choice with integrity. We love the shifts elegance is embracing. If anything, it is exciting to watch!
Like all inexplicable things in life, style and sophistication are what you are born with; and like all exceptional things – it takes a lot of practice. Enjoy the process!
